Fix It Sticks

I’ve been wanting to write some thoughts about Fix It Sticks for a while and being stuck in Villa O’Higgins for a few days waiting for the ferry presents the prefect opportunity.

I first came across the tools watching Interbike reviews and decided to give them a try.  They have been a staple of my ride and easily one of my favorite pieces of kit.  The genesis of the design stems from wanting the torque of a three-way wrench in a multi-tool.  Essentially they are separate, milled sticks that fit together to make a T-handle-style wrench with bits on all three ends.

There are currently three options available:

  1. Original – Modular “T” configuration with a choice of permanently attached bits.
  2. Replaceables – The Original but with the capability to interchange bits, allowing custom bit combinations.
  3. T-Way – Set up in a permanent T with replaceable bits on all three ends.
 Replaceables

Replaceables

I opted for the Replaceables version so I could customize my bit selection: 2mm, 2.5mm, 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, 6mm Hex, Torx 25, Phillips #2, plus two additional bits specific to the Rolhoff hub and twist shifter.  It has been the perfect tool to handle just about every trailside mechanical need while being extremely compact. With magnetized ends, I’ve not lost any bits and the setup comes with a nice hard plastic sleeve to keep additional bits not stored on the sticks organized and easy to access. Since they are modular, the sticks can be used like a torque wrench or separately so you can reach tighter spots with which most multi-tools have trouble. While I’m by no means a bike mechanic, you may just leave your multi-tool behind to collect dust once you try the simplicity and versatility of Fix It Sticks.
